Fritzens, Austria – After being edged out of the running by a tenth of a percent following last weekend’s Cedar Valley CDI 3*, Canada’s Karen Pavicic refuses to throw in the towel on her Olympic aspirations. She and the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding Don Daiquiri were confirmed today to be competing at Swarovski’s Fritzens CDI 4*, held July 1-3, 2016 in Austria, to boost her average Grand Prix score and hopefully land one of the two Canadian Olympic spots to Rio. Equine Canada’s qualification period runs from January 1, 2016 to July 3rd, 2016, meaning the results at Fritzens will ultimately decide the two combinations to go to Rio.

The best four Grand Prix and Special scores during the qualification period are averaged to decide which horse and rider combinations will represent Canada at this year’s Games. Pavicic held the second spot following the Langley, British Columbia CDI3* behind Belinda Trussel and Anton with a 74.263, but after last week’s show in Cedar Valley, in which Pavicic did not compete, Megan Lane and Caravella finished with an average of 71.0875, while Pavicic and Don Daiquiri sit at 71.039. This hairsbreath of difference bumped her and Don Daiquiri out of the running, with no more qualifying competitions being held in North America. Before even receiving the confirmation for Fritzens, she and her team were making arrangements to fly Don Daiquiri to Europe.

“It’s definitely been chaos, but I knew if we were able to get into Fritzens we would need to be prepared to leave immediately,” said Pavicic. “It’s going to be a close call, not just in getting there but also in meeting the deadline and getting the score we need. But the horse feels great, getting better with each ride, and we are so close! Even if we don’t make it to Rio, we competed at Fritzens last year and it will be a pleasure to ride there again. We’ve received an overwhelming response from around the world and I’m excited to see what the next week brings!”
